Antioxidants: Supercharged protection

Shaklee’s FlavoMax™

Many people struggle to meet the daily recommended value of five to nine servings of fruits and vegetables per day. However, without these vital amounts of fruits and veggies, the body does not receive the necessary phytonutrients provided by these essential foods that help fight free radicals.

Shaklee’s FlavoMax™ provides over 300mg of flavonoids—a 280mg increase from the average daily intake of 20mg. The high-powered anti-oxidant supplement guarantees the delivery of six key classes of flavonoids: proanthocyanidins, anthocyanidins, flavan-3-ols, flavones, flavonols, and flavanones. To ensure potency, Shaklee uses standardized extracts of each of the six classes of flavonoids.

FlavoMax:
  • Delivers powerful free-radical fighters to the blood and blood-rich tissues, such as the liver and intestines
  • Provides protection against cellular damage and promotes overall cell health
  • Supports cardiovascular and circulatory health
  • Promotes overall wellness
  • Formulated with standardized extracts that are nature-based
  • Provides flavonoids often found in plant parts not typically consumed: seeds, peels, flowers, and bark.

What are Flavonoids?
Flavonoids are compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and other plants with many beneficial biochemical and anti-oxidizing effects. These beneficial elements help to protect plants against microbe and insect attacks, while at the same time providing the aesthetically pleasing vibrant colors of many fruits and flowers. Flavonoids biologically trigger the production of enzymes that fight disease and have been found to reduce the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, and age-related degenerative diseases. Some research indicates that flavonoids can assist in the prevention of tooth decay and reduce certain illnesses, such as the flu. Different forms of flavonoids exist, each with its own characteristics and health-benefitting qualities:

Quercetin
This flavonoid (more specifically, flavonol) is the most active of the flavonoids. Many medicinal plants, such as aloe, owe their high activity levels to the rich quercetin content. The compound is also known for its anti-inflammatory qualities because of the direct inhibition of the inflammation process. This occurs because quercetin inhibits the production and release of histamine and other allergic and inflammatory mediators. Quercetin is also known for its potent anti-oxidant and vitamin C sparing activity. Many studies have led researchers to believe that the compound also contains anti-cancer properties. Quercetin is commonly found in supplements containing Hawthorne, an herbal supplement used for its healing effects on acute symptoms of heart failure. The medicinal qualities of quercetin have been demonstrated in one study where people who ate Quercetin-rich foods at least four times per week were 51% less likely to have lung cancer than those who ate none.

Epicatechin
Another member of the flavonoid family is epicatechin, a compound known to improve blood flow, thus providing positive cocoa—the main ingredient in dark chocolate. Cocoa has two times thenumber of anti-oxidant qualities as red wine, and three times the amount of anti-oxidant qualities of green tea.

A study lead by Dr. Mary Engler,PhD, RN and a team of medical experts at the University of California, San Francisco, divided 21 healthy adults into two separate groups. One group received a Dove dark chocolate bar every day for two weeks. The other group also received chocolate bars; however, this group’s chocolate had the flavonoids removed. After the two weeks, the first group performed better in tests to see how well their blood vessels dilated and relaxed. This is an indicator of healthy blood vessel function. Blood tests indicated that those who had eaten the flavonoid rich chocolate bars had high levels of epicatechin running through their arteries. In a news release, Engler commented: "This is the longest clinical trial to date to show improvement in blood vessel function from consuming flavonoid-rich dark chocolate daily over an extended period of time. It is likely that the elevated blood levels of epicatechin triggered the release of Active substances that... Increase blood flow in the artery. Better blood flow is good for your heart."

Oligomeric proanthocyanidins
Although this flavonoid has a daunting name, it provides many benefits. It has been found to demonstrate a vast variety of pharmacological activities, including increasing intracellular vitamin C levels, decreasing capillary permeability and fragility, and inhibiting the destruction of collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is a coveted compound in those seeking supple, youthful skin.

Natural Sources of Flavonoids
• All varieties of citrus fruits
• Blueberries
• Cranberries
• Blackberries
• Red beans
• Red and yellow vegetables
• Nuts
• Ginkgo biloba
• Onions
• Parsley
• Legumes
• Tea (white and green)

Shoo the Flu

The Center of Disease Control’s (CDC) primary function is to compile statistics about deaths caused by hundreds of different disease entities. Last year’s report shows, the total number of reported deaths (from all causes) was 2,426,264 people. They list flu as the number 8 cause of death, stating that 56,326 of these 2,426,264 deaths (or 2.32%) were cause by the flu. Sounds scary, doesn’t it?

However, on page 34 of this report, we are able to discover the real truth; the problem stems from the fact that the CDC lumps both flu and pneumonia deaths together. It turns out that only 849 of the reported 56 thousand deaths, or only 1.5% of them, are actually attributed to the flu. The remaining 98.5% of them died of pneumonia.

Virtually all of us carry the bacteria that “cause” pneumonia within our throats at all times. It’s an unsettling truth…we are all germ condominiums. And yet, very few of us ever develop pneumonia. Why is that? The reason is that our immune system is designed to protect us from bacteria.

Immune Cells are very high maintenance. They must operate at very high metabolic rates, enabling them to respond quickly to each attack. And like every other high-activity cell, they must reproduce much more frequently and accurately to replace those damaged and exhausted warriors. To fulfill this recurrent demand, we must have optimum levels of nutrients in our blood AT ALL TIMES.

Things that we eat, drink and inhale can depress our immune system. It is well know by all of us that alcohol, second-hand smoking and sugar can depress our immune cell activity. This is why supplementation provides such dramatic support in strengthening our immune system.

High Cholesterol levels can also suppress immune function. Research has shown that there is an inverse relationship between cholesterol levels and macrophage (White blood cells or WBCs)—the higher your cholesterol levels climb, the lower your macrophage activity. Besides our skin and mucus membranes, WBCs are our first line of defense against attacks from viruses and bacteria.

Stress is a major contributor. Stress-induced decline in health is directly associated with stressed production of stress related hormones. Studies investigating the blood levels of couples experiencing marital conflict revealed a direct relationship between high cortisol levels and dramatic decreases in immune function.

Cortisol can also damage other organ systems in the body, leading to not only depressed immune function, but also memory loss, heart disease, high blood pressure, elevated blood glucose levels, osteoporosis, and other degenerative diseases. Although short-term cortisol release is an important part of our fight-or-fight mechanism, long term exposure leads to decline in health and eventual disease.

The Nutrition solution
The alternative approach to preventing the flu involves several overlapping processes; rebuild your immune system, restore your digestive tract, removing toxic substances from your environment.

We recommend you to take:
  • Good multivitamin (Vita Lea) because it has all the essential nutrients your body needs.
  • Energizing soy protein because it is an essential building block for the repair and growth of healthy cells
  • Nutriferon because it’s a blend of natural plant extracts and induce natural production of interferon

Feature Weight Loss Program

Marina, 52 pounds healthier
"When I am standing in front of the classroom, I feel surer of myself and less jiggly. I am really enjoying the new me."—Marina says

I never had weight issues until I was in my 40s. At that time, my life became extremely busy; I was working full time and I was also a full-time college student. I felt like I did not have time to exercise or to plan meals, so I ate a lot of fast food. I did try a lot of diets, but they never worked for me. I would lose the weight—then regain it. Often, I regained even more than I had lost on the diet!

My heaviest weight was 186 pounds—and I was not happy. My husband and I were planning to renew our wedding vows at our 25th anniversary in a beautiful beach ceremony in Cabo San Lucas. I wanted to look and feel better for that ceremony, so I started the Cinch® Inch Loss Plan. I lost 30 pounds before the ceremony and had a wonderful time.

But I didn’t stop there. Cinch was working for me, so I just stayed on the program. I love the Peanut Butter Crunch Snack Bars, and I really enjoy making a piña colada shake with the vanilla shake mix, some fresh pineapple, and coconut extract. I am now 134 pounds, more than 50 pounds lighter. It has been a wonderful change in lifestyle. I watch portions, and if I eat more than I should on one day, I just watch my portions better the next day.
I learned to treat myself and my health with respect, and my body has given me great rewards in return. I have so much more confidence in everything I do. When I am standing in front of the classroom, I feel surer of myself and less jiggly. I am really enjoying the new me.
