What are Flavonoids?
Flavonoids are compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and other plants with many beneficial biochemical and anti-oxidizing effects. These beneficial elements help to protect plants against microbe and insect attacks, while at the same time providing the aesthetically pleasing vibrant colors of many fruits and flowers. Flavonoids biologically trigger the production of enzymes that fight disease and have been found to reduce the risk of certain cancers, heart disease, and age-related degenerative diseases. Some research indicates that flavonoids can assist in the prevention of tooth decay and reduce certain illnesses, such as the flu. Different forms of flavonoids exist, each with its own characteristics and health-benefitting qualities:
Quercetin
This flavonoid (more specifically, flavonol) is the most active of the flavonoids. Many medicinal plants, such as aloe, owe their high activity levels to the rich quercetin content. The compound is also known for its anti-inflammatory qualities because of the direct inhibition of the inflammation process. This occurs because quercetin inhibits the production and release of histamine and other allergic and inflammatory mediators. Quercetin is also known for its potent anti-oxidant and vitamin C sparing activity. Many studies have led researchers to believe that the compound also contains anti-cancer properties. Quercetin is commonly found in supplements containing Hawthorne, an herbal supplement used for its healing effects on acute symptoms of heart failure. The medicinal qualities of quercetin have been demonstrated in one study where people who ate Quercetin-rich foods at least four times per week were 51% less likely to have lung cancer than those who ate none.
Epicatechin
Another member of the flavonoid family is epicatechin, a compound known to improve blood flow, thus providing positive cocoa—the main ingredient in dark chocolate. Cocoa has two times thenumber of anti-oxidant qualities as red wine, and three times the amount of anti-oxidant qualities of green tea.
Oligomeric proanthocyanidins
Although this flavonoid has a daunting name, it provides many benefits. It has been found to demonstrate a vast variety of pharmacological activities, including increasing intracellular vitamin C levels, decreasing capillary permeability and fragility, and inhibiting the destruction of collagen. Collagen is the most abundant protein in the body and is a coveted compound in those seeking supple, youthful skin.
Natural Sources of Flavonoids
• All varieties of citrus fruits
• Blueberries
• Cranberries
• Blackberries
• Red beans
• Red and yellow vegetables
• Nuts
• Ginkgo biloba
• Onions
• Parsley
• Legumes
• Tea (white and green)
• Red wine
• Dark chocolate (coca content 70% or greater)
We recommend you Reading
Shoo the Flu
However, on page 34 of this report, we are able to discover the real truth; the problem stems from the fact that the CDC lumps both flu and pneumonia deaths together. It turns out that only 849 of the reported 56 thousand deaths, or only 1.5% of them, are actually attributed to the flu. The remaining 98.5% of them died of pneumonia.
Virtually all of us carry the bacteria that “cause” pneumonia within our throats at all times. It’s an unsettling truth…we are all germ condominiums. And yet, very few of us ever develop pneumonia. Why is that? The reason is that our immune system is designed to protect us from bacteria.
Immune Cells are very high maintenance. They must operate at very high metabolic rates, enabling them to respond quickly to each attack. And like every other high-activity cell, they must reproduce much more frequently and accurately to replace those damaged and exhausted warriors. To fulfill this recurrent demand, we must have optimum levels of nutrients in our blood AT ALL TIMES.
Things that we eat, drink and inhale can depress our immune system. It is well know by all of us that alcohol, second-hand smoking and sugar can depress our immune cell activity. This is why supplementation provides such dramatic support in strengthening our immune system.
High Cholesterol levels can also suppress immune function. Research has shown that there is an inverse relationship between cholesterol levels and macrophage (White blood cells or WBCs)—the higher your cholesterol levels climb, the lower your macrophage activity. Besides our skin and mucus membranes, WBCs are our first line of defense against attacks from viruses and bacteria.
Stress is a major contributor. Stress-induced decline in health is directly associated with stressed production of stress related hormones. Studies investigating the blood levels of couples experiencing marital conflict revealed a direct relationship between high cortisol levels and dramatic decreases in immune function.
Cortisol can also damage other organ systems in the body, leading to not only depressed immune function, but also memory loss, heart disease, high blood pressure, elevated blood glucose levels, osteoporosis, and other degenerative diseases. Although short-term cortisol release is an important part of our fight-or-fight mechanism, long term exposure leads to decline in health and eventual disease.
The Nutrition solution
The alternative approach to preventing the flu involves several overlapping processes; rebuild your immune system, restore your digestive tract, removing toxic substances from your environment.
We recommend you to take:
- Good multivitamin (Vita Lea) because it has all the essential nutrients your body needs.
- Energizing soy protein because it is an essential building block for the repair and growth of healthy cells
Feature Weight Loss Program
I never had weight issues until I was in my 40s. At that time, my life became extremely busy; I was working full time and I was also a full-time college student. I felt like I did not have time to exercise or to plan meals, so I ate a lot of fast food. I did try a lot of diets, but they never worked for me. I would lose the weight—then regain it. Often, I regained even more than I had lost on the diet!
My heaviest weight was 186 pounds—and I was not happy. My husband and I were planning to renew our wedding vows at our 25th anniversary in a beautiful beach ceremony in Cabo San Lucas. I wanted to look and feel better for that ceremony, so I started the Cinch® Inch Loss Plan. I lost 30 pounds before the ceremony and had a wonderful time.
But I didn’t stop there. Cinch was working for me, so I just stayed on the program. I love the Peanut Butter Crunch Snack Bars, and I really enjoy making a piña colada shake with the vanilla shake mix, some fresh pineapple, and coconut extract. I am now 134 pounds, more than 50 pounds lighter. It has been a wonderful change in lifestyle. I watch portions, and if I eat more than I should on one day, I just watch my portions better the next day.

Happy Chinese New Year
A person born in the year of the Rabbit possesses one of the most fortunate of the twelve animal signs. The Rabbit, or Hare as he is referred to in Chinese mythology, is the emblem of longevity and is said to derive his essence from the Moon.
When a Westerner gazes at the Moon, he may joke that it is a ball of cheese or tell a child the story of the Man in the Moon. When a Chinese looks at the Moon, he sees the Moon Hare standing near a rock under a Cassia tree and holding the Elixir of Immortality in his hands.
During the Chinese mid-Autumn festival when the Moon is supposed to be at its loveliest, Chinese children still carry lighted paper lanterns made in the image of a Rabbit and climb the hills to observe the Moon and admire the Moon Hare. The Rabbit symbolizes graciousness, good manners, sound counsel kindness and sensitivity to beauty. His soft speech and graceful and nimble ways embody all the desirable traits of a successful diplomat or seasoned politician.
Likewise, a person born under this sign will lead a tranquil life, enjoying peace, quiet and a congenial environment. He is reserved and artistic and possesses good judgment. His thoroughness will also make him a good scholar. He will shine in the fields of law, politics and government. But he is also inclined to be moody; at such times he appears detached from his environment or indifferent to people. The Rabbit is extremely lucky in business and monetary transactions. Astute at striking bargains, he can always pop up with a suitable proposal or alternative to benefit himself. His sharp business acumen, coupled with his knack for negotiation, will ensure him a fast rise in any career. Although the Rabbit may assume an outer air of indifference to the opinions of others, he actually withers under criticism. His "rather switch than fight" technique can be deceiving and he can be diabolically cunning when he puts his mind to it. So while the Rabbit person is tender and obliging to his loved ones, he can be superficial and even ruthless in his dealings with outsiders. Suave and self-indulgent, he enjoys his creature comforts and likes to put his own wishes first. It irks him terribly to be inconvenienced for he is a considerate, modest and thoughtful person and he would like others to be the same.
February is the Heart Month
While concerns about heart-health have become more prevalent, Americas are becoming more heart-healthy. Heart disease and stroke continue to be the number one and number three causes of death in the United States. In addition the prevalence of diabetes and obesity—both of which are severely high risk factors for heart complications—is speedily increasing.
There are more than 180 million Americans with one or more forms of cardiovascular disease, including 73 million Americans with high blood pressure. The good news in this troubling facts is that the majority of risk factors in cardiovascular complications are preventable—with family history and genetics being the only exemption. Risk factors which can be prevented include:
Obesity
Hypertension
Elevated blood cholesterol and tryglicerides
Type 2 diabetes
Smoking
Sedentary lifestyle
- Lose weight. One of the greatest risk factors in cardiovascular complications is obesity. Loosing weight is the first priority in reducing the risk of heart disease. Obesity has become a national epidemic, with 2 out of 3 Americans overweight or obese. Lowering weight even a small amount can help to improve blood cholesterol and blood pressure, and lower the risk of developing type 2 diabetes.
- Eat a balanced diet. Include foods from different food groups such as fruits, vegetables, high fiber whole grain.
- Think fishy! Consuming oily fish rich in Omega-3 fatty acids at least twice a week can help to lower the cholesterol levels, as well on providing many other added health benefits.
- Take your vitamins. Heart healthy vitamins and supplements including B vitamins, folic acid, B6, B12, antioxidants such as Vitamin E, CoQ10, can all help strengthen your heart muscles. Also include supplements such as Shaklee’s garlic complex, which can help combat heart disease risk factors by regulating blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
- Exercise! Regular physical activity at least 30 minutes a day, is essential in managing and maintaining weight, as well as strengthening your heart.
- Kick poor habits. Reducing poor nutrition habits, such as sugary soft drinks, sweets and processed salty snack foods, can help reduce weight and lower cholesterol levels as well as avoiding type 2 diabetes. Give up smoking which is a serious risk factor in heart disease.
Garlic and The Healthy Heart
Garlic can sometimes cause bad breath, but as a herbal supplement, it can have health benefits. For centuries many civilizations have garlic not only for culinary uses, but also for its amazing health benefits. The herb, which is in the same family as the onion, has a reputation for preventing everything from the common cold and flue to the plague. Garlic is one of the most popular herbal supplements. Today over 3,000 publications have recognized the health benefits of garlic, which include:
- A recognizable reduction in risk factors for cardiovascular disease and cancer.
- Stimulation of immune system function
- Restoration of physical strength
Research has shown that garlic can lower cholesterol levels on an average of 16-30% A study conducted in Munich, Germany, demonstrated that patients with high cholesterol levels who were put on a low-fat diet saw a decrease in cholesterol levels of 10% and then levels stabilized. When garlic was added, their cholesterol levels dropped another 10% The herb is so effective that in Germany is a licensed medicine for treating atherosclerosis (the hardening or blocking of arteries)
Another study which involved 360 participants who took 300 mgs of dried garlic for 16 weeks, showed an average decrease in cholesterol levels of 10%. Several other clinical experts have revealed that the use of garlic as a herbal supplement can have cholesterol-lowering effects.
COQHEART®
Everyone understands the importance of a healthy heart, but maintaining one can prove difficult. Cardiovascular health can be compromised by diet, genetics, a sedentary lifestyle, smoking, and an array of other factors. Moreover, our bodies are often deficient in substances critical to healthy heart function. One example is coenzyme Q10 (CoQ10), which helps produce energy in each cell, particularly those in the heart and other major organs. Since it has powerful antioxidant properties, it helps prevent LDL cholesterol oxidation.
CoQHeart combines two natural substances with potent antioxidant properties— CoQ10 and resveratrol — in a single, highly bioavailable softgel capsule using a technology exclusive to Shaklee.
- Combines the power of CoQ10 with resveratrol to promote heart health
- Prevents the oxidation of LDL cholesterol

Weight Loss Success Story of The Month
“Over the next three years,” Nancy says, “I tried several popular diets. Nothing worked for me; I even gained weight on one plan. My thyroid was checked in case the cancer treatment had changed its function, but it was normal. I thought I would just have to learn to accept being overweight.”
Nancy was familiar with Shaklee because her father has been taking Shaklee vitamins for 40 years. And she recalls that “learning about the Cinch® Inch Loss Plan seemed like an answer to my prayers! I needed to find ‘me’ again.”
At 200 pounds, Nancy started the Cinch program. She followed the plan diligently, tweaking it a bit to make it fit her schedule: a shake for breakfast, half of a Meal-in-a-Bar for lunch, and a sensible dinner—plus a 3-in-1 Boost™ tablet with each meal and Cinch® Energy Tea Mix each afternoon. Now she is 53 pounds lighter.
“I went from size 16 to size 10 and lost 29½ total inches,” she says.
“Cinch is very easy! The weekly measuring keeps me motivated, and I am still going strong! On my journey to attain my pre-cancer weight, I have found myself again. Thank you, Cinch, and thank you to the Shaklee Distributor who took time to come talk to me. I FEEL GREAT!”
What To Do When Someone Says Yes!
According to Key Coordinator Zal Fink and Executive Coordinator Lou Ann Salmon, when somebody says, "yes," your goal is to get them started as quickly as possible, with a simple, clearly outlined process that can help them get to Director within their first 3 months.
Here's a brief outline of what Lou Ann and Zal's organization has new Distributors doing within the first few days after they've sponsored:
- Help a new Distributor get into action as quickly as possible. A person in action has less of a chance of giving into negativity or second guessing themselves. Help them to stay focused, positive and in touch with their dream.
- Teach the fundamentals - first steps to building a business - Dream, Commit, List, Invite, Share, Sponsor and Teach.
- Help them get organized. Provide simple straightforward tools that offer a simple overview about how to get paid and earn rewards. Example: the Drive the Dream chart.
- Help them to get familiar with the two web sites that serve their business - MyShaklee.com and PWS.
- Explain the concept of Shakleeizing your home and your life. Help them to make a list of products they use now and how they can convert them to Shaklee products. This is critical not only for the new Distributor's credibility but also for development of personal conviction and their own product story. Use at least 20 products within your first 30 days. Reward and recognize people when they do this!
- Plug into team training so that they can stay connected with you and the rest of their team at least weekly, or even twice a week!
- According to Zal and Lou Ann, the critical aspect is not so much the what of your process, but it's the fact that you have one. That alone can be enough to give a new Distributor the confidence they need to go forth and do what it takes to be successful!
- To hear all about what Zal's organization has been doing to get new people started and developing as a new Director, listen to their Dream Call from Monday, 12/27. Click here to download the mp3/podcast and listen from your iPod or computer.
